USNR Offers Cortex

USNR now offers the Cortex knife system, a cost effective, long life solution featuring chip heads and disposable knives.

Cortex knives are known for superior quality and long life, while maintaining the convenience, low maintenance, and cost effectiveness of disposable chipper knives. This is a direct replacement for your existing knife system. Chip heads are available in both conical and drum design.

Cortex knives offer a smooth surface finish which is ground across the grain to improve the edge. Cortex knives are the highest quality alloy with refined grain structure for durability and wear resistance. They typically last twice as long.

Conical and drum style chipper heads are applicable to slabbers, canters, profilers, and reman heads on edgers. Knives and parts are a direct replacement for existing units.

Among the benefits the Cortex knife is accurately positioned and stable compared to other knife systems. While, a longer knife life allows mills to eliminate knife changes between and during shifts, meaning increased production. Eliminating knife changes provides a safer operating environment, while the smaller knife is easier to handle.

Cortex knives can bolt onto any existing conical or drum style head for a low cost conversion. Existing conical head fitted with Cortex parts and knives results in 20% reduction in operating cost. Existing drum top head fitted with Cortex parts and knives results in 40% reduction in operating cost, wear parts last 12 months instead of four, knife life extend to two shifts from one, and significant improvement in board finish.

The Conical head is an eight knife head was designed for USNR with 6 in. DOC; shims allow for a max .060 in. over faceplate extension; heads are mounted and balanced at USNR before shipping.  

The Cortex conical head provides consistent log control and maintenance. There is no need for extra thick faceplates and bases to change out, simply setting the facing knives locks them in position.
