U.S. Housing Starts Show Significant Jump In September

U.S. housing starts increased 7% in September from August, coming in at a seasonally adjusted rate of 1.358 million, according to the U.S. Census Bureau and U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development monthly new residential construction report. Single-family starts were at a rate of 963,000, up 3.2%, and multi-family starts were 383,000, up 17%.

Building permits were 1.473 million, 4.4% below August, though single-family was 965,000, up 1.8%, while multi-family permits were 459,000, down 14%.

Housing completions were at a rate of 1.453 million, 6.6% above August, with single-family at 998,000 completions, up 5.3%, and multi-family at 445,000, up 10.1%.

Industry Says Goodbye To Walter Jarck

Walter Jarck, whose career in the forest products industry spanned 65 years and ranged from logging machinery to engineered wood products, died January 3, surrounded by his children, in North Wilkesboro, NC. He was 92.
