Roughly 100 employees at the Resolute Forest Products sawmill near Oakhill will be out of work as the effect brought by the parent company’s decision to indefinitely stop operations at the newsprint facility in Queens County is felt in Lunenburg County.
Resolute Forest Products announced last week that it will “indefinitely idle” the newsprint mill near Liverpool starting on June 17. The paper mill employed 180 people. Woodlands and Brooklyn Power facility workers, about 39 people, are also impacted.
Resolute said the company plans to “work collaboratively with governments to ensure that impacted employees are provided support during this transition,” a statement posted on the Resolute Forest Products website said.
Spokesman Seth Kursman said it’s the company’s intention to run the Oakhill-area sawmill until the remaining log inventory is consumed. That process is expected to take three weeks and then that site will stop operating.
