New Year Brings In Housing Starts Dip

U.S. housing starts dropped 4.1% in January 2022 from December to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.638 million, according to the U.S. Census Bureau and U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development monthly new residential construction report.

Single-family starts in January were at a rate of 1.116 million, 5.6% below December, while multi-family (five units or more) starts were 510,000, down 2.1% from December.

U.S. Census Bureau now reports that 2021 housing starts came in at 1.597 million, with single-family at 1.125 million, compared to 1.379 million and 990,500, respectively, in 2020

The January starts decline followed three consecutive months of increase.

Housing building permits were at a seasonally adjusted rate of 1.899 million, less than a percent above December, though single-family at 1.205 million was 6.8% above December. Multi-family permit rate was 629,000, down nearly 9% from December.
