Canfor will be adding another power-generating turbine to its biomass-fired energy system as part of $8 million in capital upgrades to its Fort St. John sawmill announced Tuesday. Canfor Corporation President and CEO Don Kayne says the investment will improve efficiency and shows the company’s commitment to the local mill.
“This capital project will improve cost efficiency at our Fort St. John mill and help move us toward energy self-sufficiency,” he says in a release. “We are pleased to be able to make this sizable investment, which reflects our confidence in our Fort St. John operation.”
Mayor Lori Ackerman is welcoming the announcement, saying, “A strong forest sector contributes significantly to the wealth of our region, and we appreciate Canfor’s confidence in our community and our economy.”
The Canfor mill in Fort St. John produces 200 million board feet from logs harvested mostly from the Fort St. John Timber Supply Area annually.
