The Issues: Our Industry Is On A Mission
If you’re looking for optimism during the coronavirus crisis, you might turn to page 54 of your copy of the April issue. It’s the same “coming events” listing page that runs in every issue. That’s the point: The page lists the names, locations and dates of events as if they will actually be held (when, as I write this, we’re all wondering when there will ever be another event held.). TIMMINS, Ontario – One-hundred years ago, Rudolph-McChesney Lumber built a modest sawmill on the banks of the Mattagami River in the newly established town of Timmins. The mill supplied timber to the nearby gold mines and growing community of miners. A century later and the sawmill – now owned by EACOM Timber and producing nearly 150MMBF of dimension lumber annually – remains an important employer in the northern Ontario town, as well as a model for sustainable forestry and local investment in the forest industry.

Safety Is Top Dog At GP Philomath
Article by Dan Shell, Senior Editor, Timber Processing
PHILOMATH, Oregon – Production and high speed, high tech machinery may grab the headlines when it comes to lumber manufacturers, but maintaining a growing culture of safety awareness and learning creates improved communication and team effort that lead to safer and more efficient overall operations, say team leaders at GP’s sawmill here in western Oregon.
“Every day is a journey, and we have a long way to go, but it’s exciting because the numbers show we are making a difference,” says Plant Manager Pat Van Rooyen, who’s been at the mill since 1995. “We know we’re going to have learning events, but hopefully our culture can keep pushing awareness. Our people are excited about it, and it translates into measurable results around the mill.”
Acquired in 1992, the facility is GP’s only West Coast sawmill. The 8-24 ft. random length operation produces 2×4 thru 2×12 lumber, plus some 4 in. material. Output is 60% KD.
