Productivity & Efficiency: A Conference By Timber Processing

Co-located with the Forest Products Machinery & Equipment Exposition (EXPO 2021) in Atlanta, Georgia, Productivity & Efficiency: A Conference By Timber Processing, sponsored by Southern Forest Products Association, will be a single day featuring dynamic, topical presentations for the lumber industry. A mix of equipment suppliers, consultants and mill personnel, the August 12 presentations will cover project implementation, lumber recovery and other mill enhancements and an in-depth look at continuous dry kilns.

RICEBORO, Georgia – Looking to expand in North America, DS Smith, a European-based corrugated packaging leader, purchased Interstate Resources Group in 2017, including the longstanding kraft linerboard paper facility in Riceboro. DS Smith was attracted to the Riceboro mill because of its virgin pulp fiber and proximity to the Port of Savannah. The deal also included adjacent RB Lumber, a timbers production sawmill, and affiliated timberlands.

LUFKIN, Texas – It is not a stretch to think of a greenfield startup as a well choreographed ballet. There are many players, a new stage and everything must follow the same beat, everyone leans on the veterans to help show the rookies what to do, and in the end something a little magical happens. A greenfield sawmill isn’t exactly magic, especially in the U.S. South these days, but it is still a modern marvel. For Angelina Forest Products (AFP) Mill Manager Wiley Quarles, the magic was not in tying his vendors together, or watching the engineers do their thing, it was in the promise and realization of jobs in his community. A native of Angelina County, Quarles has spent his career working in corporate mills throughout east Texas. The chance to be a part of an independent 270MMBF sawmill startup is always exciting for lumbermen, but Quarles says this just felt a little different.

The primary equipment throughout the green and dry ends of AFP is USNR, a decision made by management after previous experience with the manufacturer.

The newest greenfield facility in the U.S. South saws 270MMBF annually in east Texas.
